Kika – a mother, wife, and social worker – sees her life turned upside down when she falls

passionately in love with another man. But just as she gives in to her feelings, she suddenly loses

her beloved and is left alone – pregnant and in debt. To make ends meet, Kika turns to sex work.

Presented at Cannes, the film speaks of the reality of single mothers and their difficult path to

economic independence, like an ironic Pretty Woman for our times.

Alexe Poukine

Alexe Poukine is a director, actress, and screenwriter. Her documentaries Dormir, dormir dans

played the lead role. The film received the Grand Prize at the Brive Film Festival and the Jury

Prize at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival. Kika is her first narrative feature, presented in

Cannes’ Critics’ Week program.
